Famous Hong Kong publisher Dr. Chan Man-Hung(陳萬雄) last Wednesday (9 October) held for a Freshman College-East (FCE) evening talk with students about “How does one become accomplished”. Dr. Chan encouraged students to face difficulties in the pursuit of their dreams and cultivates their own critical thinking as young intellectuals.

Dr. Chan received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Hong Kong in 1989. He devoted himself to a publishing career for more than 30 years and became the president of Sino United Publishing (Holdings) Limited (聯合出版集團有限公司) which is the biggest complex publishing company in HK. At the evening talk in FC Library, moderated by the FCE Master, Prof. Chung, Dr. Chan first delivered the experience of his school life, his work and shared his conviction to the students.

When asked by a freshman student about how to make a transition from high school to university and university to one’s career, Dr. Chan suggested, “You need to find yourself, find your passion, your talent and think on your own. The most important of all is to be a positive learner instead of being told as you were in the high school. You will have your own conviction and critical thinking. That matters and that makes who you are.”

In the next morning of 10 Oct, Dr. Chan was invited to do calligraphy. He quoted from an essay by Zhuge Liang (181-234) ,the greatest strategists of post-Han China, “非學無以廣識,非靜無以成才”(one has to learn in order to broaden one’s knowledge; One has to be tranquil in order to become accomplished) to encourage all freshman students.
