Cheng Yu Tung College Successfully Held Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Chan Man Hung: “Traditional Culture and Our Education.”

 

Cheng Yu Tung College invited famous historian and distinguished editor and publisher in Hong Kong, Dr. Chan Man Hung, to deliver a lecture on traditional Chinese culture and our education. Dr. Chan cited various thinkers and presented plenty of examples from classical and modern eras to explain the relationship between education and profound Chinese culture. He emphasized the importance of general education, and pointed out that traditional Chinese culture was the nutritional source of our education and was inexhaustible. His talk received an enthusiastic response. About sixty students and scholars from both Cheng Yu Tung College and faculties attended the lecture.

Dr. Chan was the General Manager and Chief Editor of the Commercial Press (Hong Kong) Ltd. He was also President of the Sino United Publishing (Holdings) Ltd. As an outstanding publisher, Dr. Chan was in overall charge of various large publishing projects, such as The Complete Collection of Forbidden City, China’s Regional Cultures, A Pictorial Encyclopedia of Chinese Medicinal Herbs Series, The Complete Collection of Dunhuang Grottos, etc. Dr. Chan received his PhD in history at Chinese University of Hong Kong. He specializes in the history of modern Chinese culture and thought. He has written many books, such as Chen Du-xiu Before New Cultural Movement, Origin of Chinese May Fourth New Cultural Movement, and a large number of articles. In 2003, he captured the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Publishing Awards.
