Cheng Yu Tung College successfully carried out its third service-learning program in Xiushui County, Jiangxi Province. Sixteen students from CYTC, led by Resident Fellow Ms. Diane Lu, visited Yusheng Jinrong No. 2 Primary School to carry out volunteer teaching activities. They also visited the Shankou Conference Historical Site and the Former Residence of Huang Tingjian, gaining a deeper understanding of patriotic values and the cultural history of Xiushui.
Since 2023, the Macao Special Administrative Region Government and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao have jointly participated in the national rural revitalization program, designating Xiushui County, Jiangxi, as a key support area. Cheng Yu Tung College has actively followed this initiative. From May 25 to June 1, the team conducted a service-learning program at Yucheng Jinrong No. 2 Primary School, serving approximately 116 children (grades 3 to 5) and organizing a Children’s Day carnival for all 262 students.
Based on feedback from local teachers, the children needed more development in sports, arts, and science education. Therefore, the team designed interactive learning activities centered around the Dragon Boat Festival and Children’s Day. For example: Dragon Boat Festival: Making handmade dragon boats (art), learning about the festival’s origins and solar terms (science), and exploring regional differences in zongzi (geography and life skills). For Children’s Day: Studying celebrations worldwide (e.g., mask-making for Colombia’s festival, blind football from Germany) and discussing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to promote global awareness.
This “festival-based, experience-driven” approach created an immersive learning environment, blending cultural heritage with global perspectives. During their stay, the team also visited the Shankou Conference Historical Site, a key location in revolutionary history, which deepened their patriotic spirit and connection to Shankou Town. Additionally, touring the Former Residence of Huang Tingjian, a famous Northern Song Dynasty scholar, enriched their understanding of Xiushui’s cultural legacy. This program not only supported rural education but also strengthened the team’s appreciation for history, culture, and community service.
