Cheng Yu Tung College (CYTC) is dedicated to nurture students’ love of humanity. Two community service projects were initiated to provide opportunities for students to learn how to serve others. The first project collaborates with Centro do Servico de Fornecimento Temporario de Alimentos da Caritas (food bank) which is affiliated to Caritas de Macau and the second one works with Cradle of Hope Macau. Students in CYTC are very enthusiastic in community service. It is surprising to receive more than 80 (we have 120 students in total) registrations for a single project.
Now the Cradle of Hope service project has come to an end. Cradle of Hope provides family-like living environment for 0-6 year old children who suffered from trauma of abuse, abandonment or neglect. It provides a secure environment for children to heal and grow to become a successful member of the society. 11 students participated in this activity. They were divided into 5 groups to take care of children of different ages. Students go to service every weekend for at least 10 weeks and 3-6 hours each time. Although it was exhausting, students enjoyed being with the kids and learned a lot from the volunteer experience.
In the group sharing, students shared their feelings and reflections; here are some quotes from them. “We are very tired every time after the service, we fall asleep on the way back in the bus every time and sometimes even lean on the passenger aside. Even so, I am happy doing the volunteer service. It is the happiest time in the week.” Another student said “I don’t like children before, but now, when I see a child on the bus, I could not stop looking at him/her.” “I am amazed by children’s talent, they are fast leaners and very creative.” “I learned to be a responsive person through the service.” “I learned to be patient.” “I learned to behave myself so that I can set an exemplar for the children.” “I learned how to take care of children.”
The project was a success. Students have established close relationships with the children and several of the volunteers committed to continue to serve in Cradle of Hope. More community service activities will be organized by Cheng Yu Tung College.
